Summary

AN INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Named one of the most anticipated novels of the season by People, Associated Press, TimeLos Angeles TimesParadeSt。 Louis Post-DispatchThe GuardianPublishers Weekly, and more。

From the #1 bestselling authors Hillary Clinton and Louise Penny comes a novel of unsurpassed thrills and incomparable insider expertise—State of Terror

After a tumultuous period in American politics, a new administration has just been sworn in, and to everyone’s surprise the president chooses a political enemy for the vital position of secretary of state。

There is no love lost between the president of the United States and Ellen Adams, his new secretary of state。 But it’s a canny move on the part of the president。 With this appointment, he silences one of his harshest critics, since taking the job means Adams must step down as head of her multinational media conglomerate。

As the new president addresses Congress for the first time, with Secretary Adams in attendance, Anahita Dahir, a young foreign service officer (FSO) on the Pakistan desk at the State Department, receives a baffling text from an anonymous source。

Too late, she realizes the message was a hastily coded warning。

What begins as a series of apparent terrorist attacks is revealed to be the beginning of an international chess game involving the volatile and Byzantine politics of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran; the race to develop nuclear weapons in the region; the Russian mob; a burgeoning rogue terrorist organization; and an American government set back on its heels in the international arena。

As the horrifying scale of the threat becomes clear, Secretary Adams and her team realize it has been carefully planned to take advantage of four years of an American government out of touch with international affairs, out of practice with diplomacy, and out of power in the places where it counts the most。

To defeat such an intricate, carefully constructed conspiracy, it will take the skills of a unique team: a passionate young FSO; a dedicated journalist; and a smart, determined, but as yet untested new secretary of state。

State of Terror is a unique and utterly compelling international thriller cowritten by Hillary Rodham Clinton, the 67th secretary of state, and Louise Penny, a multiple award-winning #1 New York Times bestselling novelist。

Pretty good story - especially because it could be real。。。 The only issue I had with the story is with the timing of the flights。 Flying to the Middle East and back, then back to the ME, then to Russia in what seemed like 1 or 2 days。 No sleep mentioned, no passing of time。 Just go go go, done。 But I did like the story。BLURB: State of Terror follows a novice Secretary of State who has joined the administration of her rival, a president inaugurated after four years of American leadership that shr Pretty good story - especially because it could be real。。。 The only issue I had with the story is with the timing of the flights。 Flying to the Middle East and back, then back to the ME, then to Russia in what seemed like 1 or 2 days。 No sleep mentioned, no passing of time。 Just go go go, done。 But I did like the story。BLURB: State of Terror follows a novice Secretary of State who has joined the administration of her rival, a president inaugurated after four years of American leadership that shrank from the world stage。 A series of terrorist attacks throws the global order into disarray, and the secretary is tasked with assembling a team to unravel the deadly conspiracy, a scheme carefully designed to take advantage of an American government dangerously out of touch and out of power in the places where it counts the most。This high-stakes thriller of international intrigue features behind-the-scenes global drama informed by details only an insider could know。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 Its a great page turner and reads really well。 And Penny succeeds in making this a Gamache book。 Nice。 There’s a quotable saying that I found amusing。 The setup is when the American Secretary of State arrives in Moscow in a deep freeze without proper winter clothes before meeting with the president of Russia。 She’s asked how she’s doing and replies ‘I’m fine’。 It seems innocuous but then Penny explains the alternative meaning of F。I。N。E。 Which I found memorable。 My br I really enjoyed this book。 Its a great page turner and reads really well。 And Penny succeeds in making this a Gamache book。 Nice。 There’s a quotable saying that I found amusing。 The setup is when the American Secretary of State arrives in Moscow in a deep freeze without proper winter clothes before meeting with the president of Russia。 She’s asked how she’s doing and replies ‘I’m fine’。 It seems innocuous but then Penny explains the alternative meaning of F。I。N。E。 Which I found memorable。 My brother translated it to ‘ca va bien’ - bagarreur, insecure, émotif, névrosé。 。。。more

This was written well, but I did not enjoy something that could actually happen。 This kind of stuff just sucks in real life so reading it in fiction was not enjoyable。

Political thrillers are not my cup of tea, but this one held my interest, even though I found it to be contrived with clunky attempts to manipulate the reader。 Clinton certainly had a field day skewering an administration very much like Trump's。 And Penny was able to squeeze in a role for the little town of Three Pines and the beloved Armand Gamache from her long series。 My favorite part was the authors' notes where they talked about how this collaboration came about。 Political thrillers are not my cup of tea, but this one held my interest, even though I found it to be contrived with clunky attempts to manipulate the reader。 Clinton certainly had a field day skewering an administration very much like Trump's。 And Penny was able to squeeze in a role for the little town of Three Pines and the beloved Armand Gamache from her long series。 My favorite part was the authors' notes where they talked about how this collaboration came about。 。。。more

(Audio version, which I highly recommend)I admire both of these women, and this book lived up to。。。and beyond。。。my expectations。 Combine Hillary's insider knowledge of White House workings with Louise's storytelling expertise, and you get a gripping, hard-to-put-down story。 Armand Gamache even managed to slip into the mix。If/when this is made into a movie, I wonder who will play the egotistical, clueless former President and who will play the clever female Secretary of State。 (Audio version, which I highly recommend)I admire both of these women, and this book lived up to。。。and beyond。。。my expectations。 Combine Hillary's insider knowledge of White House workings with Louise's storytelling expertise, and you get a gripping, hard-to-put-down story。 Armand Gamache even managed to slip into the mix。If/when this is made into a movie, I wonder who will play the egotistical, clueless former President and who will play the clever female Secretary of State。 。。。more

Wow! Just finished State of Terror by Hillary Clinton and Louise Penny and 。。。 what a ride! I was hooked by page 13 when a low-level foreign security officer in Asian Affairs receives a cryptic message: no words, just a series of numbers and symbols。 My mind went immediately into alert-mode。 By chapter 8, I thought I would explode from all the pent-up anxiety。 And it didn’t let up for nearly 500 pages!

I’m such a fan of Louise Penny that of course I read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it。 Another great read!

I got sucked right into the drama, the intrigue and the politics。 I found it unrealistic, but at the same time the ideas were plausible in te novel。

HRC isn't necessarily for me, but together with Louise Penny they are a dynamo writing duo。 I love thriller books, and while there is a noticeable lack of strong female characters, Secretary of State Ellen Adams does her part to bridge the gap。 I really appreciated that while there were subtle nods to current affairs, unlike so much current fiction they never came right out and addressed it - which made it a lot easier to read smoothly as fiction。If you enjoyed this one, I would recommend Penn HRC isn't necessarily for me, but together with Louise Penny they are a dynamo writing duo。 I love thriller books, and while there is a noticeable lack of strong female characters, Secretary of State Ellen Adams does her part to bridge the gap。 I really appreciated that while there were subtle nods to current affairs, unlike so much current fiction they never came right out and addressed it - which made it a lot easier to read smoothly as fiction。If you enjoyed this one, I would recommend Penny's series featuring Armand Gamache - and vice versa。And just remember。。。 Hell is empty, and all the devils are here。 。。。more

I new I would like this book because of the author’s。 I was not let down。 I don’t usually read Political Thrillers。 Am glad I read this one。 I went into this book with a open mind。 Not like some reviewers that kept their minds closed for whatever reason。 I have read all of the Three Pines books。 I saw Louise in Denver,Co for a signing and listened to her talk about herself and her books。 Just love her。

Political thrillers are not often a genre I read。 My late father and my late friend both loved the genre, though, and they would talk about them often when my friend would come to my family's house for holidays。 Judging from their conversations, I think this book is an excellent example of the genre。 Reading it provided fond memories of our times together。 Like most political thrillers, much of this book was unbelievable。 (Although I read it in the middle of the January 6 hearings, so who knows Political thrillers are not often a genre I read。 My late father and my late friend both loved the genre, though, and they would talk about them often when my friend would come to my family's house for holidays。 Judging from their conversations, I think this book is an excellent example of the genre。 Reading it provided fond memories of our times together。 Like most political thrillers, much of this book was unbelievable。 (Although I read it in the middle of the January 6 hearings, so who knows what is unbelievable any more。) I really enjoyed the beginning, but there was a LOT going on as the book progressed。 It definitely kept me turning the pages, though。 I appreciated the fact that the female characters weren't described as beautiful and sexy, and I especially appreciated the fact that two of the main characters were somewhat dowdy middle aged women。 My favorite part of the book might be the acknowledgements at the end where the two authors describe how the book came to be。 Louise Penny's story of how they became friends before writing the book was lovely and heartwarming。 。。。more

Fun book, and more than a little scary given today's political climate。 My bggest criticism is the overall lack of character development。 Most of the characters seemed 2--dimensional and flat。 Fun book, and more than a little scary given today's political climate。 My bggest criticism is the overall lack of character development。 Most of the characters seemed 2--dimensional and flat。 。。。more

Meh。 Started very slow but picked up towards the end。

While espionage and terrorists are not my norm in reading taste, I did enjoy this book, whose main character is a Secretary of State。 Lots of twists and an ending which leaves the reader thinking that some of the book’s main characters will be back for a second round。 Cloud library—audio。 Joan Allen was the narrator, and she did an excellent job。

Elizabeth

Very good。 Better then the Bill C/ Patterson collaboration。 Would read another。 Have never read a Louise Penny book but I feel I definitely should。

Overall atmosphere of the story was similar with the show House of Card。 Politics and national safety which could be boring or too serious without any humor。 The thing I enjoyed the book was, they put many locational changes - moving here and there to resolve/prevent issues - make variation on plot to get rid of monotonous compositions。 The other thing is, as a woman, it was nice to women play main roles in the book。 Furthermore, they didn't explicitly described difficulty as an women。 It was to Overall atmosphere of the story was similar with the show House of Card。 Politics and national safety which could be boring or too serious without any humor。 The thing I enjoyed the book was, they put many locational changes - moving here and there to resolve/prevent issues - make variation on plot to get rid of monotonous compositions。 The other thing is, as a woman, it was nice to women play main roles in the book。 Furthermore, they didn't explicitly described difficulty as an women。 It was totally natural that women works on major role on national security。 。。。more

Generally I stay away from novels that are collaborations by a well-known author and one is not so well known。 Without anyone in particular, this became an overused device for one well-known author。 The books produced by the"'collaboration" contained pages of extra larger print with chapters consisting of five pages or less that were disappointing。 However, after reading a number of reviews for State of Terror, I decided that I would give it a try。 This book is a a thriller at it's best and yo Generally I stay away from novels that are collaborations by a well-known author and one is not so well known。 Without anyone in particular, this became an overused device for one well-known author。 The books produced by the"'collaboration" contained pages of extra larger print with chapters consisting of five pages or less that were disappointing。 However, after reading a number of reviews for State of Terror, I decided that I would give it a try。 This book is a a thriller at it's best and you will keep the pages turning。 I am a fan of Louise Penny and her Inspector Gamache series one of my favorites。 Great plots, smartly writing and delightful characters。 Thus, I knew that had the skills to deliver a good story, and to my delight --she did! 。。。more

I’ll be looking to read more by Louise Penny in the future! 。。。more

I was surprised that I liked this so much。 I’ve read Louise Penny books before and they’re slow moving Murder mysteries that I’ve enjoyed but got kinda bored with。 For the most part this kept me interested and engaged。 I did feel like there were a lot of little jabs at Donald Trump for example the former president in the book is a wealthy man considered by many as just a puppet and only got elected thanks to the Russians。 He’s narcissistic and cocky and it’s quite obvious who the guy is patterne I was surprised that I liked this so much。 I’ve read Louise Penny books before and they’re slow moving Murder mysteries that I’ve enjoyed but got kinda bored with。 For the most part this kept me interested and engaged。 I did feel like there were a lot of little jabs at Donald Trump for example the former president in the book is a wealthy man considered by many as just a puppet and only got elected thanks to the Russians。 He’s narcissistic and cocky and it’s quite obvious who the guy is patterned after。 And it was kind of weird how that about 3/4 of the way through the book you’re introduced to characters from Louise Penny’s Gamache novels。 It just seemed like an afterthought to almost get to the end of the book and then plop those characters in。 Overall I still really like it 3。75 stars 。。。more

The story is all too plausible。 The twists and turns, questioning allegiances and enemies。。。 pure Louise Penny。 Excellent intrigue。 Strong female protagonists without turning them into stereotypes。

Robin Damon

I have read all of Louise Penny Inspector Gamache books。 This one had her style and she even included Three Pines and Gamache in the plot。 I think Hillary’s insights as past Secretary of State were spot on。 As she said in the afterword let’s hope we can manage to keep the plot fictional。

I love HRC so much, and I think this might make a good movie, but as a book, something was missing for me。 I almost gave up on it a few times。

As a work of "fiction," this was OK and a pretty good thriller; however, given its author, it was hard to ignore the similarities of the Dunn administration, including where Dunn ended up living。 There were a lot of digs about the Dunn (Trump) administration and Dunn as a person。 It also was not lost on me that the secretary of state was a badass woman。 I was looking for a good fiction read, not a vendetta book, so I didn't much care for this one。 As a work of "fiction," this was OK and a pretty good thriller; however, given its author, it was hard to ignore the similarities of the Dunn administration, including where Dunn ended up living。 There were a lot of digs about the Dunn (Trump) administration and Dunn as a person。 It also was not lost on me that the secretary of state was a badass woman。 I was looking for a good fiction read, not a vendetta book, so I didn't much care for this one。 。。。more
